Pedaling Through Life - 6 Months Back-to-Back Cycling

Introduction

Six years ago, I embarked on a journey into the world of road biking, a journey that would ignite a deep passion within me. However, it was on July 1st, 2023, at the beginning of a new business quarter at my workplace, that I undertook a transformative adventure that lasted six months.

The Cycling Arsenal: A Technological Odyssey

My cycling journey was intertwined with technology, which played a pivotal role in tracking and enhancing my rides. Armed with my reliable ‘Cervelo Caladonia’ road bike for outdoor biking and a ‘Wahoo Kickr Bike’ for indoor riding, each day, I pedaled tirelessly through various terrains, indoors and outdoors, unveiling a new layer of my inner strength.

Platforms like Zwift and Strava became my virtual companions, transforming my rides into social events no matter where I ventured. Outdoors, the Garmin Edge 1030 Plus meticulously recorded my journeys, offering valuable insights into my rides and helping me navigate both challenging and picturesque routes.

To monitor my performance metrics, I relied on a heart rate monitor, cadence, and speed sensor, and a power meter. These gadgets became essential tools in my journey.

The Grind and the Grins: Embracing Challenges with Humor

The cycling journey is a rollercoaster of challenges and triumphs. On some days, I battled long work hours, late-night social commitments, and even a pesky common cold that tempted me to break my riding streak. Yet, I remembered Albert Einstein's wisdom: "Life is akin to riding a bicycle. To maintain balance, one must keep moving forward and meet challenges with a cheerful spirit."

One vivid memory stands out - a grueling day with a late-night work event that stretched until midnight. The temptation to skip my ride was strong, but Einstein's words echoed in my mind. Surprisingly, that ride became one of the most gratifying, proving that the toughest rides often yield the most satisfying rewards.

Solo Meditations and Priceless Friendships: The Dual Nature of Cycling

Cycling solo is akin to meditation in motion, a time when the rhythmic turning of the pedals allows your mind to wander and explore your thoughts. Yet, cycling with friends is an experience beyond measure.

In this extraordinary journey, I owe immense gratitude to the Lone Star Dragons, my biking team. Their unwavering inspiration and encouragement have been my constant companions on the road. Each member, a unique source of greatness, has etched indelible marks of joy and learning in my heart. Our camaraderie, skills, and spirit have propelled us forward and built a legacy of teamwork and excellence on the open road.

Our coffee breaks at local gems like Pax & Beneficia Coffee Shop, Marty B's Coffee Shop, Brew And Batter, Ascension Coffee, and Graduate Coffee have become cherished traditions, offering moments of refueling and a chance to share cycling stories, laughter, and dreams. It's astonishing how a good cup of coffee can rejuvenate both body and spirit, turning a simple break into a celebration of our shared passion.

The Painful Indoors and Joyful Outdoors: A Tale of Two Worlds

Indoor cycling using the Wahoo Kickr Bike became my alternative on busy days or during adverse weather conditions. Yet, it presented its own set of challenges, lacking the liberating feeling of outdoor cycling where the wind kisses your face, and the scenery constantly changes.

But, as Lance Armstrong once wisely noted, "Pain is temporary, quitting lasts forever." Indoor rides, though demanding, were crucial in maintaining my consistency and building the mental fortitude needed for longer outdoor journeys.

Balanced Living: Fueling the Ride

This journey taught me the importance of balance, both on and off the bike. Proper nutrition, a regular sleep routine, and hydration became the pillars of my physical well-being. A nutritious diet fueled my rides, while a consistent sleep schedule ensured I was prepared for each day's challenges.

Pre- and post-ride stretches became non-negotiable parts of my daily routine, helping me prevent injuries, maintain flexibility, and recover swiftly after demanding rides.

Hydration emerged as a critical component of my rides. Before, during, and after my rides, I paid meticulous attention to staying hydrated, using INFINIT's custom blended hydration mix or refreshing coconut water during my journeys.

As a personal choice to enhance my overall health, I gave up social drinking nine months ago. This decision had a profound impact on my cycling experience and performance, leading to improved hydration, enhanced recovery, better sleep quality, and increased energy levels.

Yoga: The Unexpected Catalyst

Throughout this journey, I discovered the transformative power of Yoga, something I had never considered before. Introduced to Yoga classes by my wife, I found it instrumental in building flexibility and core strength, essential for enhancing my cycling performance. Poses, stretches, and breathing techniques, once dismissed as "not for me," became integral to my daily routine. As I delved deeper into Yoga, I embraced the mind-body connection it nurtured.

The Bittersweet Reality: Safety on the Road

Amidst the exhilaration of cycling, I couldn't ignore the bittersweet nature of this sport. News of accidents involving cyclists, some tragic, served as stark reminders of the risks we face on the road. This reinforced my commitment to safety and vigilance while cycling.

As we step into 2024, our new Lone Star Dragons team jerseys not only boast style but prioritize safety. Vibrant fluorescent colors increase our visibility on the road, emphasizing the importance of safety.
As cyclists, we must acknowledge the sobering truth that "as a cyclist, we are invisible to everyone on the road, except ourselves." Therefore, safety remains paramount - wearing bright clothing, helmets, adhering to traffic rules, carrying fully charged lights, and having a small first aid and tool kit.

Achievement Unlocked: The 5000-Mile Milestone

My six-month-long adventure culminated on December 31st, 2023, a journey spanning 184 days. Each day was a lesson in humility and strength. The pinnacle of this experience was a singular 200-mile journey on December 30th, crossing the 5000-mile mark for the year. It was more than a mere distance; it stood as a testament to the enduring power of persistence and the beauty of modest achievements in a grand journey.

In Summary

The fusion of technology, camaraderie with the Lone Star Dragons, and the dual experiences of indoor and outdoor cycling enriched my life.
